The oldest museum in Slovenia
The National Museum of Slovenia is the oldest museum in Slovenia: in 2021 it celebrated its 200th anniversary.
Existent museum building in the very centre of Ljubljana, in the Muzejska Street, was built in 1888 as the Provincial Museum for Carniola – Rudolfinum. Today it stores rich collections of valuable objects: archaeological, numismatic, and graphic collection, important columns of museum activity are also rich museum library and unit for preservation and restoring.
Here you can see the oldest musical instrument in the world, 60,000 years old Neanderthal flute from the Divje babe cave. Another remarkable object is a charming Vače situla. Of course there is a vast collection of other interesting archaeological objects that tell a story of the life before our time, e.g. findings from the Ljubljana Marsh and the Ljubljanica River, the only ancient Egyptian mummy in Slovenia, gilded bronze statue of Emona citizen, imperial stone inscription from Emona, Germanic ornamentation from the Migration Period and Early Middle Ages wooden traps.

Photographing of exhibitions and exhibits for personal needs is allowed only without flash and tripod.
Filming and photographing with intention of further publication of photographs is allowed only with preliminary written permission of administration.
Wheelchair Accessible Entrance
To wheelchair users the museum is accesible from Prešernova Road 20.

Guided tours can be given in Slovene language and several foreign languages.
Admission
Free admission for pre-school children, journalists, people with disabilities or their escort, and members of ICOM.
Free admission to the museum each first Sunday in the month.

Public parking is available in the immediate vicinity of the museum (Šubičeva and Kongresni trg car parks, street parking).
