SoftIron | Software Engineers, Systems Engineers | International | REMOTE or ONSITE | https://softiron.com/

Edit: Hey all, we got an overwhelming amount of great applications, so we've temporarily closed this down. We'll re-open if we don't find a match.

We produce vertically-aligned, on-prem, clustered, private cloud appliance. We design the hardware (motherboard, BMC, etc) and write the software (obviously integrating open source components where it makes sense eg. KVM, but also writing our own). Everything comes from a single vendor - us. The result is a cloud-like experience with no finger pointing and no shoe-horning as it was all built to work together. We have offices around the world, but fully remote is great, too.

Marketing-y blurb follows:

We’re building a globally distributed, locally embedded organisation that enables our Softies to be located in the place they live and work the best. Rather than plunder the global talent pool to relocate to Silicon Valley (though you can if you want) you can be where you do your best work and participate in our global community of Softies using platforms we’ve built or customised to make that possible.

As a venture backed company we’re growing and changing fast, and in some cases you could get the chance to build or influence that growth in ways not possible in more traditional businesses. We don’t just accept the “industry norm” and constantly challenge ourselves to do things better, often working at the leading edge of where IT infrastructure and open source are heading.

Obviously it’s much better to ask here and wait for an official response as you have done, but if for any reason that answer doesn’t come, you might look up Rob, the VP of Engineering. It somewhat matches the HN handle, and regardless, he should know who to put you in contact with.

I was being obtuse on purpose so that young ones and those from more goal-seeking cultures wouldn't spam, but I was imagining a google search leading to a LinkedIn profile.

My apologies, I added my email to my profile and thought it was public. Didn't see the note about adding it to the 'about' section. I've updated that now and I'll email you.

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) | Staff Software Engineer | Full Time | NYC ONSITE

Apply: https://mo.ma/3Isll0b

We have a really exciting roadmap the next few years and I'm looking for an IC counterpart to help lead and build the future of digital product at one of the world's pre-eminent art institutions. We build the moma.org website and a few other touchpoints for visitors, built using a combination of mostly Go/RoR/JavaScript. There are a lot of interesting technical and product challenges that this role will be key in helping figure out, in addition to the technical challenges of a likely re-platform over the next couple years. It's a very unique opportunity particularly if you love art.

Must be located in (or willing to relocate to) the NYC area as we do work at the museum 2-3 days a week. Salary range is $130K-150K USD, and unfortunately no visa sponsorship available. Apply here: https://mo.ma/3Isll0b

Nonprofit salaries are generally not as high as other sectors. There are still good reasons why lots of people would want to work for a nonprofit, particularly one as prestigious as MoMA. And that is more than livable, even in NYC.

The median household income in NYC is $70,663. We're talking about Manhattan mainly for this job, so let's double that. That's still less than the 150k salary, and this is a single person, not a household.

I promise you, you're not going to be homeless at 150k.

I'm confused what you're even replying to

THIS is what we're discussing:

> And that is more than livable, even in NYC.

> No, it's not.

(Aside here: you made a new account to argue against straw man arguments?)

What? OP was replying to an assertion that 150k is not “liveable” in NYC. Of course the median household income in the city is relevant to that.

That all depends on what you mean by livable, no?

Your mileage may vary, but as a professional of that standing, having invested substantial time and intellectual energy to master my profession, my social requirements, for my spouse, my children, my friends, where we go, what we do, are not going to be satisfactorily met by such an income level in New York City. This doesn't even have anything to do with personal preferences in such matters, but ultimately how one lives and provides for loved ones and the natural company one keeps.

Developers are not children. We are professionals and our profession is in fact one of the more highly demanding cognitive professions.

I don't think many people will claim 150k is market price for a staff engineering position in NYC. But it is more than enough to live in Manhattan. Full stop.

If MoMA or another non-profit offers you a salary than fails to support your lavish lifestyle: don't accept it. Hope that helps.

Median NYC household income in 2021 was 70,663. Pretty sure double the median income is a livable wage.

> a prospective employer first makes you "consent" to a legal agreement before even getting to employment application

What kind of legal agreement are they asking you to sign off before the job application?

Sounds like CloudKitchens. Cloud Kitchens engineering managers cold emailed and then told you to sign an invention assignment agreement just to do the first call with the engineering manager.

Very low for a staff engineer in NYC, but 150K to work in the arts actually seems somewhat competitive to me. Wait until you hear how little most broadway actors/ensemble members make. 150K will take you pretty far if you want to live the bohemian artist life in NY, especially if you want to live in neighborhoods with other artists, e.g. Washington Heights.

I'm just wondering but isn't 150k almost nothing in NYC? Does anyone know what the cost of living is, for instance, for a 3 bedroom apt, etc.

I'm in the center of NYC so I'll answer this question. Currently, it's about $2,800 for a studio and $3,500 for a one bedroom. If you're single I'd say you need around 120k to live somewhat okay. That's 6.6k a month after taxes so minus about 3k it's 3.6k a month for bills, food, and however else you want to budget the rest. Depends on your lifestyle of course.

If you want a three bedroom then you'd want to live outside of NYC and commute about an hour by train. It'll be around 3k-4k then.

Yeah...what about retirement accounts? If you're not putting money away into retirement, you're either bad at managing money or just scraping by.

150k is perfectly liveable in NYC, even in Manhattan heart. It’s probably not feasible to have a three bedroom apt in Manhattan on that budget but it’s very doable in the less hot parts of Queens, Brooklyn and Bronx. If you think of moving to Long Island, you can even rent a house with a yard.

You will probably need a partners income if you want to live in a unit where you can raise a child, and will need significantly more for the both of you to raise multiple children.

3 bedroom apt in NYC? There's not a lot of those and that's going to be insanely expensive, like $5k+/month for sure.

I lived in NYC for almost a decade and I don't remember anyone having a 3 bedroom.

I lived in 1 bedroom in Astoria (Queens) for $1.5k-$2k

Lots of tech jobs pay 150k or less in NYC. I'd think its probably just below median.

Grit | Software Engineers / ML Engineers | New York or (rarely) Remote | Full-time | $150–250k + equity

We’re building software to automatically fix technical debt. We do this by combining expressive static analysis tooling (we’ve built a developer-friendly query language for code) with machine learning to automatically migrate code to new patterns and platforms. We’re in private beta, but have deployed thousands of successful changes for initial customers and have raised a large seed round from top investors (Founders Fund, 8VC, Abstract Ventures). We’ve solving challenges at the intersection of machine learning and programming languages using Scala, Rust, TypeScript, and LLMs. We’re hiring for both smart generalists and PL/ML experts who are interested in collaborating on problems like automatically inserting new types into codebases and using unit tests for self-supervised learning.

Here are a few reasons you might be interested in applying:

- We’re working on the edge of the possible and doing deep technical work in parsers/language design and machine learning.

- We mostly work in-person in New York, but remote is also possible for outstanding candidates who have proven success in a remote model.

- I’m personally committed to giving quick feedback to everyone who applies.

Find out more at https://www.grit.io/careers or email [email protected].

Hi! Would Grit be open to any Software Engineering Interns? I have some experience with Rust, Typescript and Scala and would greatly be interested in applying those skills.

Interesting company!

I hope that it can create tests for the code that changes to ensure that it retains the same outputs (including side effects) for the same inputs.

But I have to ask: how do you define tech debt? What about these scenarios:

  1. comments above the code say “do not touch, here be dragons” ;)

  2. code change velocity is currently zero, team used to care and wanted to change to something modern, no one cares anymore.

  3. above but with good testing

  4. active code velocity at moderate level with ok tests but old/bad patterns, and is an interchange for various parts of the system

  5. high velocity code change, no tests, known bug utopia, zillion a/b tests, marketing wants changes hourly. 8)

We can create some tests, but also focus a lot on ingesting and understanding existing testing (including migrating it over).

As for defining "tech debt" we are not really in that business. Think of Grit like a very patient junior developer: able to do lots of work, but not necessarily who you want defining the application architecture. We don't presume to know your codebase better than you.

Instead, our sweet spot is things like:

- Upgrading a critical business application from Angular 4 to Angular 15 (or even converting it React)

- Taking an existing test/mocking approach used for 10% of database models and inserting equivalent tests on other models

- Automatically removing dead code after feature flags are rolled out broadly

Nice. I’m very excited to see where the “jr dev ai” goes in the next 5-10yr.

I am a little worried more broadly about jr devs not getting work and thus never getting the experience to become sr devs. I imagine jr devs will come from locations where an ai is too expensive.

I think the tasks that AI will take first are broadly the tasks where jr devs would not be gaining much useful experience anyway. For example, the rote work involved in upgrading an application from Angular/React X to X+1. The available AI tools are still very bad at novel tasks, architecture/design, etc.

Any chance you'd be interested in technical product leads w/ strong technical background who've worked on AI products before?

I love the detail of the `You:` section. I am 35 (almost 36) years ago, still friends with guys from Uni, and UNTIL THIS DAY, I complain about how they didn't deep dive Pthreads and Linux programming in our Operating Systems classes.

I think the real question is: why C++ is better for not defaulting to an automatic GC that does heap compaction? Think of what would happen to all those pthreads. :P

AI Research firm | Zug/Zurich area | Full time | On site | 100-200k chf/annum | 1 year research residency program.

I am starting a new AI research team funded by applying ML to crypto algo trading. Over the last three years years, the ML-based trading operation turned 5 digits into 9 digits, trading a volume of around 1-4B per day, with a team that has grown to 7 engineers. The crypto markets are a bit more calm now, so things don’t look as good as before, but still good enough to move on with the plan of using trading profits to fund the research operation.

To be clear, I did start the trading operation with the intention to fund fundamental AI research (capability and safety) since the very beginning. In the meantime, both AI and crypto markets went through boom and bust cycles, and I expect there will be many more to come. We need to build an operation that can go through many such cycles which is why I want to grow the research team slowly and cautiously.

This is the first role for the research team. It includes studying and doing research together with me. The contract will last 1 year by default and end. If the research is promising, and if finances allow, it can be extended into a full-time research role. The compensation for the initial residency program will depend on the person applying and can be higher for exceptional candidates.

The high-level research agenda is whatever might help to get to AGI in the long run, with safety in mind. My own research interests are the following: deep learning, probabilistic programming, world models, self-play, and more recently LLMs. With regards to LLMs, I’m interested in studying their inner workings, for example how optimising for a simple objective (predicting the next token) gives rise to “emergent behavior” such as the ability to count, or theory of mind.

If interested, contact me at not_a_cat at fastmail. co[m].

Census | Engineers (full stack, frontend, security) | Offices in SF, NYC, Denver | Full-Time, REMOTE OK, Visa transfers OK | https://www.getcensus.com

Apply here: https://getcensus.com/careers?utm_source=hnhiring

With Census, you can power every SaaS application you use from a single source of truth - your own data warehouse. Customers use Census to define one unified view over their entire business (their customers, assets, financials, application data, really anything at all) in SQL or dbt and then "publish" that view to every single SaaS application they use: Salesforce, Zendesk, Marketo, Stripe, and over 100 more.

Curious about what we've been working on? Check out the engineering blog: https://census.dev

Hi! Would Census be open to any Software Engineering Internships for this summer? Thank you.

Y Combinator (yes, the people who run this site) | Infrastructure Software Engineer | Bay Area | Full-time | https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/y-combinator/jobs/0Ewh...

I currently run YC’s infrastructure and I need some help! Over the last 7 years I’ve been at YC, our software team has grown considerably both in engineers and in products. We need to invest more in our infrastructure so we can keep shipping our products quickly.

The main thing you’ll need in this job is curiosity; I work at every layer of a very large stack. One day you might dig into AWS apis, another it’s a 3rd party Ruby gem or our git history. Or maybe you get paged that all the SSDs for Hacker News (primary and standby!) died on the same day :) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32028511.

The first few months will be heavier on infrastructure work but in the future the job will hopefully be equal parts developer experience, infrastructure work, and product engineering that impacts all of our products (think SSO, sending email, security, etc).

The main products we support are all Ruby on Rails apps running in AWS (mostly in ECS); ideally you’ve already worked on apps like that. You have at least 5 years of experience. Part of that was shipping code to customers but you’ve also got cloud experience (we try to mostly use Terraform). You’re probably the person people turn to when there’s a fire to put out.

YC has excellent compensation and benefits (see more in the formal job description below). The team and the work life balance are great. About half of us are former founders and many of us are parents. And if you’re curious about startups (and possibly starting one someday), this job gives you amazing access to interact with YC’s programs, partners, and founders.

If you’re interested, I’d love to chat! I’m [email protected]. Or you can apply here: https://www.ycombinator.com/careers?ashby_jid=0ff92c0f-f73b-...

Heard that working 70+ hrs/w is normal here. Also that y'all didn't go with Battleye due to it being too expensive and went the creating your own internal AC route. With suing modders like Chrome X Mods.

> Commenters: please don't reply to job posts to complain about something. It's off topic here.

Rockstar, and indeed the entire AAA gaming industry, is known for the industry-wide hellacious crunch times. Anyone applying should be able to find ample testimony of this on Glassdoor, HN, Reddit, and presumably 4chan.

The rest is clearly off topic in Who’s Hiring.

What you say is indeed true, but the part of the post "Existing Visa Transfers Welcome" might attract some groups who don't know the way things work and who may be more desperate (and not willing to reject) such terms.

In theory, any extra replies to a job post which are not beneficial would end up as collapsed noise anyway, right?

Hi! Are there any opportunities for Software Engineering internships at Rockstar this coming summer?

We're a revenue-generating business and are scaling our operations throughout London and the UK, and to do that we need improve a lot of our internal operations (data analyst) and build tools to help us reach more home owners, estate agents, and contractors (software engineers).

We're big fans of functional programming, using fp-ts (typescript) throughout the codebase, and we run fortnightly haskell and machine learning study groups to improve our skills and think of more clever ways to improve the business.

Some other tech buzzwords we use (apart from typescript and fp-ts) include postgresql, big query (and the rest of the google cloud platform), and looker.

WunderGraph | https://wundergraph.com/ | Full-time | Senior Golang Engineer | Remote

WunderGraph is the BFF (Backend for Frontend) Framework. Our solution helps developers to manage the API Dependencies of their applications and create BFFs in no time. Our long term vision is to build GitHub for APIs, a collaboration platform for API creators and consumers.

At the core of our product is the "Engine", a Gateway/Compiler/AST Transformation Engine that translates between GraphQL, REST, Databases, SOAP, gRPC, AsyncAPI and more. Client Request -> AST -> Transformation -> Origin Request(s) -> Response Transformation.

This Engine allows our users to get one unified interface across all their API Dependencies, so you can easily use GraphQL or TypeScript (using our API ORM) as the "Frontend".

We're looking to expand our Engine Team to further improve the capabilities, add more possible data sources, like gRPC, Kafka, etc... Therefore, this job is not about creating web services and such, but rather deep dive into the world of ASTs, Transpilers, different API Protocols and such. I'm one of the founders (CEO) and would love working on this full time, but there's just so many other things that need to be done. We're currently 13 devs, with 3 focussing on the Engine.

Stainless | Founding Engineer | NYC ONSITE | Full-time Stainless is building the platform for high-quality, easy-to-use APIs.

Our first product is SDKs as a service – you send us your OpenAPI spec, and we generate pacakges in all the major languages and publish them to npm/pypi/etc (think `npm install your-company`). These SDKs are world-class: you get an idiomatic wrapper with autocomplete, types, etc. (I built a version of this at Stripe for their SDKs, and am now building a better version for everyone.)

Next, we want to make it easy to build amazing REST APIs. REST is simple and ubiquitous, but right now it’s also messy, chaotic, and hard to get right. We’re going to build great open-source standards and tooling that bring the benefits of GraphQL (types, field selection/expansion, standards) and gRPC (types, speed, versioning) to REST.

From there, we plan to build out a rich family of developer platform products – everything an API team would need to deliver a terrific DX to their partners and/or customers.

We’re about a year old, under 5 people, have strong revenue, and are selling to companies you interact with every day. We’re backed by Sequoia, a bunch of (ex-)Stripe people, and founders of Next.js, Prisma, and Segment.

As a founding engineer, you’ll get autonomy to build great products, skilled peers, opportunity for tremendous impact, competitive salary, and a very competitive ownership stake.

We’re looking for exceptionally productive, thoughtful, tasteful, and kind people with a passion for making software development better for everyone. Want to build the future of API tooling? Say hi: alex at stainlessapi.com

Kanary | Backend Engineer | Seattle, Remote (US or Canada) | $120k base + generous equity

We’re scaling an automated security risk detection and data removal service for individuals. You might be a fit if you have experience doing CTF challenges, distributed systems work and/or web scraping. If you want to be on the ground level of building the most advanced automation platform for personal data security, privacy, and safety, keep reading.

As a backend-focused engineer, you’ll own projects involving infrastructure, devops, data flows, and APIs. But as an early startup teammate, you’ll work across all parts of our product, marketing, and strategy. Some examples:

\* Using hardware and software to navigate the web anonymously \* Using LLM agents to build internal tools for developers and support \* Reverse engineer identification systems meant to harvest data and discriminate access

We’re a YC-backed team with previous startup, growth, and engineering experience at IBM, Shopify, Northwestern, Stanford, Tableau, and law enforcement. We’re backed by top VCs (2048, First Star) and privacy-leaders (Mozilla Foundation, DuckDuckGo). Together, we launched our product and 9x’d our membership - without paid advertising.

Tactically, our software runs on AWS and we use Django and React. Strong knowledge of Python, Go, and SQL is a plus. If you learn quickly and love the mission, but don’t have these core skills, please still reach out. We care most about people who are fantastic teammates over industry experts.
