Gallagher Statement on Micron Ban

WASHINGTON, DC – Chairman Mike Gallagher (R-WI) today released the statement below following the Chinese Communist Party ban on microchips made by the Boise, Idaho-based Micron.

“On May 21, the Cyberspace Administration of China determined, without providing evidence, that products made by U.S. firm Micron Technology pose a national security risk to the People’s Republic of China (PRC). This is the latest example of PRC economic coercion, designed to intimidate the U.S. government from implementing export controls and harass the U.S. companies that abide by them. The United States must make clear to the PRC that it will not tolerate economic coercion against its companies or its allies.

" __ The Commerce Department should immediately add ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) to the entity list and ensure no U.S. technology, regardless of specifications, goes to CXMT, YMTC, or other PRC firms operating in this industry. The Commerce Department should also ensure no U.S.-export licenses granted to foreign semiconductor memory firms operating in the PRC are used to backfill Micron, and our South Korean allies, who have experienced exactly this kind of CCP economic coercion firsthand in recent years, should likewise act to prevent backfilling. We must respond quickly and decisively to show the PRC the free world cannot be divided and will not be intimidated.”
