Apple seems to have a no code/low code vision for AR experiences on its forthcoming AR glasses, a report from The Information claims. That report suggests making an AR game may become as easy as asking Siri to play the next track.
AR for the rest of us
The Information report is already setting news wires ablaze. It claims users will be given the tools they need to easily build their own AR apps, and an AR app store from which to sell those apps to others. The report also claims they’ll be able to use Siri to build those apps.
If true (and The Information have a good rep), then this gives us useful insight into how Apple is thinking about the product.
It means the company will do all it can to empower content development across the new platform. It also shows Apple’s teams have got their head around the idea that the technology itself will be so new to most people that making AR experiences will benefit from the wisdom of crowds.
The theory is solid – if you give people tools that enable them to develop great ideas, then others will want to explore those ideas. And if you give them a store to buy and sell those things through the motivation grows greater.
It’s also a big democratization of the process of creating AR content. Apple must have this notion that to really rock the virtual boat it’s going to need to break invention away from being corralled inside big budget production houses. Though Apple is also speaking with Disney and others for content, so it could get exciting.
Kind of like “AR for the rest of us,” I suppose.
Think back and some may recall how the introduction of desktop publishing solutions empowered so many people to create.
I think that’s at least the ‘vibe’ of the idea here.
If it works, this strategy may (like DTP) help kick start evolution of a forest of content, which is essential for AR to succeed. It remains to be seen if any of those solutions turn out to be life-changing. But Apple has a plan there too, the report claims.
Health and wellness
Apple seems to have a vision around health and wellness with its AR glasses. Apparently, the report claims Apple has built meditation experiences and it’s like a real no brainer to think you’ll be able to run an Apple Fitness program too, with all your vital info showing on screen.
It’s not at all impossible that the health and wellness features could extend over time. Might Apple have a plan to offer virtual doctor’s appointments combining multiple technologies?
Bottom line? I think these are going to get a lot of interest once they appear. And this will be the beginning. I don’t think Meta’s going to matter in a year or two’s time.
