Google-Fiber-logo.png Lakewood will become the first city in Colorado to receive Google Fiber’s fiber-to-the-building network, expanding the competitive market for high-speed broadband service for the city’s residents and companies. Lakewood joins a select group of cities nationwide where Google Fiber has deployed its 100% fiber optic internet service.

Updates

2024 Quarter 1 update: The pace of permitting and construction are on track to have the first customer served by late summer. Crews are currently performing construction across four permit areas between West Sixth and West 13th avenues and Quail to Harlan streets. Google Fiber expects construction to start south of West Sixth Avenue in the coming months. From this point forward, Google Fiber will be providing quarterly newsletters rather than monthly ones.

1. What is Google Fiber?

Google Fiber is a gigabit internet service provider with the mission of helping all communities access high-speed, high bandwidth internet. Google Fiber currently offers gigabit internet service to residents and small businesses in 17 metro areas nationwide, between Google Fiber, a fiber-to-the-home network, and Google Fiber Webpass, a wireless network in apartments and condominiums. Google Fiber will build a fiber-to-the-home network in Lakewood.

2. How long has the City of Lakewood been working on this?

In 2019, Lakewood voters approved a city ballot question that reestablished Lakewood’s right to provide all telecommunications services, high-speed internet services (advanced services), and cable television services restricted since 2005 by the Colorado General Assembly with the passage of Senate Bill 05-152. With its passage, voters sentiments were made clear and the city began working to bring additional providers to Lakewood. Direct talks with Google Fiber began earlier in 2022.

3. When will they start and how long will it take to complete installation?

Like any project of this size, the construction process can take time. However, Google Fiber is starting planning now and will begin construction work in 2023. The company expects it to take several years to complete the network in Lakewood. Google Fiber works to limit disruption and will notify affected residents and businesses as construction is permitted and takes place on their block.

4. How fast is Google Fiber?

Google Fiber offers both a 1 gig and a 2 gig product, so customers can choose the right service for their household.

Also, with Google Fiber there are no data caps, and 1 gig provides a symmetrical connection – meaning equal speeds for uploads and downloads. Google Fiber recently announced that they will be launching 5 gig and 8 gig service in 2023.

5. What subscription plans will be offered to Lakewood residents?

Google Fiber currently has the following product offerings in eligible markets:

  • 1 gig: up to 1,000 Mbps upload and download; $70/month
  • 2 gig: up to 2,000 Mbps download and 1,000 Mbps upload and download; $100/month
  • Google Fiber Phone: an add-on option at $10/month

Small businesses will also be able to sign up for our offerings for businesses:

  • Business 2 gig: up to 2000 Mbps; $250/month
  • Business 1 gig; up to 1000 Mbps; $100/month

Additionally, residential 5 gig ($125/month) and 8 gig ($150/month) are expected to be available when service launches in Lakewood. More information about pricing and availability is at google.com/fiber.

6. Will every resident in Lakewood be able to access Google Fiber?

Google Fiber’s goal is to reach as many Lakewood households as possible.

7. Will the installation be disruptive to commuters or neighborhood traffic?

Google Fiber will construct its network within the city right of way, in accordance with all permitting requirements. Lakewood residents can expect to see construction crews in the roadways and adjacent softscapes/yards that are part of the city’s right of way and easement. Crews will notify residents and businesses ahead of construction staging by way of door hangers, street signage, cones and other safety and informational efforts.

Google Fiber works to limit traffic impacts and disruption to residents.

9. Will it be available to multifamily units?
